Vying for the title of Smallest Brown Bar in Amsterdam, Belgique is well worth a visit if only to attempt the bottom step of the stairs after a few Westmalle Triples! Warm, welcoming and very Dutch.

OK place to stay. Rooms small but generally clean. Avoid lower deck, I stayed there once and the smell from the toilet was pretty dire -staff did not want to acknowledge this so it took much agrgueing to getthem to move me to another cabin.
All extras you pay for or pay a deposit. For example you will need to leave a deposit (refundable) for the key to the room safe.
Breakfast OK but pricey unless you wnt to eat a lot. Then it is worth it.
Allow ten-fifteen minutes to walk to Central Station and the Trams -more if you are carrying luggage.
Bar very basic, but OK for a quick drink before going out of an evening or for a nightcap

Landmark. Muntplein or Mint Square is pretty much the centre of Amsterdam for me. Shopping streets converge here as do many tram services, Close to flower market and Rembrandtplein with its bars and restautants.

If you can get there early enough, I highly recommend sitting downstairs in the back by the window at one of the large tables. It's so nice to smoke and drink coffee while watching the ducks swim by. Keep in mind that if a large group comes in, you should offer the large table to them.

this hostel/coffeeshop is centered right in the middle of Leidseplein and we found a lot of tourists there. Very cool place to hang out with bars and places to eat right outside the door.
